Designer - Kate Unger
Kate’s background began
in the theatre world, studying at the Central School of
Speech and Drama in London, for a degree in Theatre and
Costume Design. During this time she worked with a variety
of jewellery designers including Eileen Coyne from whom
she learnt the art of bead work. She also worked at the
Talisman Gallery in Harvey Nichols, where she gained an
appreciation of precious and semi-precious stones.
For a number of years she was
employed as a part of the display team at Harvey Nichols,
renowned for its innovative window treatments which Kate
saw as an alternative to the theatre she loved. Three years
later, having gained confidence in her own artistic repertoire
and talent, she decided to work freelance, in order to develop
her own personal portfolio. Her first job was designing,
crafting and installing the windows for the trendy Covent
garden make-up shop Pout, as well as its numerous concessions.
She also used her sense of theatre to style and design elaborate
parties in London, including the re-launch of Richard Branson's
Kensington Roof Gardens, a variety of events at the Victoria
and Albert Museum and Film Premieres. These jobs gave her
the expertise in graphic design, soft furnishing and calligraphy,
which she has gone on to use professionally as well.
Last year she was engaged by
Penhaligons the Perfumers and put in charge of all the window
displays and visual merchandising for their shops in the
UK and the USA.
